Sprains & Strains

What is a Sprain & Strain?

Back Sprains and Strains refer to injuries to the muscles, tendons, or ligaments in the back. A sprain involves overstretching or tearing of ligaments, while a strain involves overstretching or tearing of muscles or tendons. These injuries are common and can range from mild discomfort to severe pain.

Mechanism of Injury:

Back sprains and strains often occur due to sudden movements, heavy lifting, twisting, or overuse. Poor posture, weak core muscles, or previous injuries can also contribute. These injuries are common in activities that involve bending, lifting, or twisting, especially when done improperly.

Symptoms

  • Pain: Localised pain in the back, which may be sharp or dull.

  • Stiffness: Difficulty moving the back, especially after rest or in the morning.

  • Muscle Spasms: Involuntary contractions of the muscles in the injured area.

  • Swelling and Bruising: Possible swelling or bruising around the affected area.

Treatment

Clinic Treatment:

  • Assessment: To determine the severity and specific location of the sprain or strain.

  • Dry Needling: To release tight, overworked muscles and reduce pain.

  • Ultrasound Therapy: Applied to the injured area to reduce inflammation and promote healing.

  • Massage: Focused on the injured muscles to relieve tension, reduce spasms, and improve blood flow.

  • Hot Stones: Used to relax muscles and increase circulation in the affected area.

  • Cupping: Applied to the back to enhance circulation and reduce muscle tension.

  • Reassessment: To monitor improvement in pain levels and mobility.

  • Rehabilitation Plan: Includes gentle stretching and strengthening exercises for the back and core muscles, postural training, and advice on proper lifting techniques to prevent re-injury.
